Breast Enlargements (Augmentation)

If you are dissatisfied with your breast size, augmentation surgery is a choice to consider.  Breast augmentation can:

  • Increase fullness and projection of your breasts
  • Improve the balance of your figure
  • Enhance your self-image and self-confidence

Also known as augmentation mammaplasty, the procedure involves using implants to fulfill your desire for fuller breasts or to restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy.  Implants also may be used to reconstruct a breast after mastectomy or injury.  Breast augmentation alone does not correct severly drooping breasts.  If you want your breasts to look fuller and to be lifted due to sagging, a breast lift may be required in conjunction with breast augmentation.  Dr. Marble will assist you in making this decision.

Options for Breast Implants:

  • Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water.  They can be filled with varying amounts of saline which can affect the shape, firmness and feel of the breast.
  • Silicone implants are filled with an elastic gel.  The gel feels and moves much like natural breast tissue.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

A woman's breasts often change over time, losing their youthful shape and firmness.  These changes and loss of skin elasticity can result from:

  • Pregnancy
  • Breast feeding
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Aging
  • Gravity
  • Heredity

Also known as mastopexy, a breast lift raises and firms the breast by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour.  Sometimes the areola becomes enlarged over time, and a breast lift will reduce this as well.  A breast lift can rejuvenate your figure with a breast profile that is youthful and uplifted.

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a procedure for a woman who has lost a breast due to cancer or other disease.  Reconstruction of a breast that has been partially or completely removed is possible through a combination of plastic surgery techniques that not only creates a new breast but also can dramatically improve a woman's self-image, self-confidence and quality of life.  The results of breast reconstruction can be relatively natural in appearance and feel, however a reconstructed breast will never look or feel exactly the same as the breast that was removed.

Breast reconstruction typically involves several procedures performed in multiple stages and techniques that attempt to restore a breast to near normal shape, appearance and size following a mastectomy.

  • Flap techniques that reposition a woman's own muscle, fat and skin to create or cover the breast mound.
  • Tissue expansion that stretches healthy skin to provide coverage for breast implant.
  • Surgical placement of a breast implant to create a breast mound.
  • Grafting and other specialized techniques, such as nipple tattooing, to create a nipple and areola.

A consultation with Dr. Marble is the first step to learn how breast reconstruction can restore your breast's appearance.

Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammaplasty)

Overly large breasts can cause some women to have both health and emotional problems.  In addition to self image issues, you may also experience physical pain and discomfort.  The weight of excess breast tissue can impair your ability to lead an active life.  The emotional discomfort and self consciousness often associated with having large pendulous breasts is as important an issue to many women as the physical discomfort and pain.

Also known as reduction mammaplasty, this procedure removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion to your body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts.

In many cases, breast reduction is covered by health insurance.

What Patients Have to Say...

Male Breast Reduction

Also known as gynecomastia, breast reduction for men is the surgical correction of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men.  Plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is technically called reduction mammaplasty, and reduces breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest contours.  In cases where gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction techniques alone may be used.

In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be reduced.

Gynecomastia is characterized by:

  • Excess localized fat
  • Excess glandular tissue development
  • A combination of both excess fat and glandular tissue
  • Gynecomastia may be present in one or both breasts

Nipple Tattooing

In some cases of breast reconstruction nipple tattooing can be an option. Tattooing is a simple, fast procedure. If you are matching a new nipple areola to the existing breast, your plastic surgeon will mix various colors and shades to get the correct pigment. If you had bilateral reconstructions, your surgeon can use your preoperative photos to recreate the nipple color, or you can pick a new color that you like against your skin tones. As with any tattoo, the pigment will fade in time. Getting the right shade of color may require more than one tattoo procedure.
